Dangers Of Cosmetic Surgery By Non-board Certified Doctors

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports continued growth in cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic procedures have long included rhinoplasty, face-lifts, scar revision, liposuction, abdominoplasty and breast augmentation. One of the fastest growing cosmetic surgical procedures in the U.S. is the Brazilian butt lift. PlasticSurgery.org describes the procedure as removing fat from an area where it’s not wanted—such as the abdomen or thighs—and placing it into the buttocks. “Essentially, this is a combination of liposuction AND buttock augmentation.” An error during plastic surgery can result in complications which include abnormal scarring, infection, nerve and tissue damage, disfigurement, excessive bleeding, and death.Tragically, many fatalities and injuries are not the result of unavoidable complications, but of serious mistakes and procedures.

In the news, physician Osakatukei Omulepu is charged with malpractice following Brazilian butt lift surgeries. Dr. Omulepu is not board-certified in plastic surgery and was working for a network of office surgery clinics in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Florida’s First District Court of Appeals affirmed the Florida Department of Health’s decision to revoke Omulepu’s license. The Department of Health filed a complaint after Omulepu injected fat into one patient’s sciatic nerve and repeatedly punctured the bowels of another.

Not all doctors claiming to be plastic surgeons are board certified in plastic surgery. Any licensed physician can legally call himself a cosmetic surgeon. The training of a plastic surgeon is complex with a five year general surgery residency followed by a two year fellowship in plastic surgery. Dr. Omulepu did not have specific training in plastic surgery which resulted in harm to his patients.
