The Neurosurgery Expert Witness

On March 14, 2016, experts from the medical, military, athletic and research communities collaborated in the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee Broad Review of Concussions: Initial Roundtable. Neurosurgeon Geoffrey T. Manley, MD, PhD, Chief of Neurosurgery at San Francisco General Hospital and Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of California San Francisco, participated in the roundtable. Dr. Manley is an internationally recognized expert in neurotrauma.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 1.7M people in the US suffer a traumatic brain injury each year. Strikingly, traumatic brain injury is a contributing factor in one third of all injury related deaths.

In the news, former Detroit Lions defensive Tracy Scroggins has filed a lawsuit alleging that an NFL study underreported incidences of concussions. The neurosurgery expert witness is called upon to consult and opine in cases such as this involving injuries to the spinal column, spinal cord, brain and peripheral nerves.
