SURGICAL EXPERTS

Surgical experts are medical doctors who devote their careers to the diagnosis and treatment of surgical disease. Surgeons typically see patients in clinic and perform minor procedures in their office, though most surgical procedures are performed in certified office surgical suites, ambulatory surgery centers (ASC), and hospital operating rooms.

Surgeons in the United States perform nearly 200 million inpatient and outpatient surgeries every year, and the number has been steadily increasing for decades. In general, the most common surgical procedures include cataract removal, Caesarian section, total joint replacement, orthopedic fracture care, hysterectomy, cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal), coronary artery bypass, and appendectomy. In terms of purely elective surgical procedures, Plastic Surgeons dominate the field and perform nearly 20 million aesthetic procedures yearly including facelift (rhytidectomy), liposuction, breast augmentation, and tummy tuck (abdominoplasty).

Since the number of adult surgeries far outweighs the number of pediatric surgeries, General Surgeons overshadow Pediatric Surgeons by a ratio of greater than 20-to-1, and most pediatric surgical procedures are performed by General Surgeons who have a subspecialty certificate in Pediatric Surgery. The only other ABMS-certified surgical specialties devoted to children are Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery, Pediatric Urology, and Complex Pediatric Otolaryngology. While devoted Pediatric Surgery specialists handle nearly all pediatric surgical conditions, surgeons who specialize in Otolaryngology or Plastic Surgery often treat children and adults.

Given the diversity of surgical treatments, the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) recognizes 11 primary fields of surgery and 24 subspecialty fields. Examples of primary surgical fields include Colon & Rectal Surgery, General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Thoracic & Cardiac Surgery, and Urology. Subspecialty fields are equally diverse and include Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery, Congenital Cardiac Surgery, Surgery of the Hand, and Surgical Critical Care.

By aligning with Elite’s in-house Case Strategy Team, clients across the globe have access to hand-selected, nationally respected leaders in every surgical field and surgical subspecialty.
