Cardiology expert witness Dr. Ra-id Abdulla testified in the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas case against GlaxoSmithKline PLC. The pediatric cardiologist reviewed medical records of plaintiff Baden Rader and his mother Elisabeth Balzer. Dr. Abdulla believes her Paxil use during pregnancy contributed to Braden being born with a combination of four heart defects. Twelve year old Rader underwent heart surgery as an infant and again in 2015. Dr. Abdulla stated that Rader will need future invasive surgery.
On April 4, 2016, Judge Kenneth Powell granted a midtrial dismissal in the Rader case. However, RADER ETAL VS SMITHKLINE BEECHAM CORPORATION may lead to an appeal and it is the first of nine Paxil birth defect cases in the Philadelphia County mass tort litigation program. (A search for “Paxil-Pregnancy” on https://www.courts.phila.gov/ lists the case names, status, and case number.)
Dr. Abdulla is a pediatric cardiologist at the Rush Center For Congenital & Structural Heart Disease at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. His practice includes the treatment of congenital anomalies of the heart. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Pediatric Cardiology Journal.
