Cardiology expert witnesses will be testifying in the mass tort litigation regarding the blood clot medication Xarelto. Over 3000 lawsuits have been filed in the U.S. against Xarelto’s maker Bayer AG as well as distributors of the pharmaceutical. Plaintiffs allege the drug has caused uncontrollable bleeding in thousands of patients as well as numerous fatalities.
Cardiac disease is prevalent in the United States. The cardiologist may prescribe an anticoagulant to help prevent clots from forming in the blood. This is recommended for patients with some types of heart disease, including atrial fibrillation, pulmonary embolism, as well as after artificial heart valve surgery. The FDA warns:
XARELTO can cause bleeding which can be serious, and rarely may lead to death. This is because XARELTO is a blood thinner medicine that reduces blood clotting. While you take XARELTO you are likely to bruise more easily and it may take longer for bleeding to stop.
You may have a higher risk of bleeding if you take XARELTO and take other medicines that increase your risk of bleeding, including:
aspirin or aspirin containing products
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
warfarin sodium (Coumadin®, Jantoven®)
any medicine that contains heparin
other medicines to prevent or treat blood clots
An experienced board certified cardiologist is an invaluable resource in evaluating a pharmaceutical prescribed for heart conditions. These experts are qualified to consult and testify on the complex side effects which may stem from a drug such as Xarelto.
Judge Eldon E. Fallon will preside in the Eastern District of Louisiana case IN RE: XARELTO (RIVAROXABAN), MDL NO. 2592 PRODUCTS LIABILITY LITIGATION.
