Dermatopathology Expert Witness

DERMATOPATHOLOGY is a medical specialty focused on the diagnosis of benign and malignant skin diseases. Dermatopathologists use microscopes, immunofluorescence, electron microscopy, genomics, and other advanced technologies to analyze skin biopsies for diagnostic purposes. Given the fact that there are over 1500 dermatologic conditions with more being added every year, the field of dermatopathology is inherently complex.

ABMS board certification in Dermatopathology requires a medical degree (M.D.) followed by residency training in Dermatology or Pathology, and a subsequent fellowship in Dermatopathology. Dermatopathlogists work in labs and private offices to interpret skin biopsies sent from Dermatologists, Plastic Surgeons, and General Surgeons. Common diseases diagnosed by Dermatopathologists include:

  • Skin cancer: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and melanoma
  • Pemphigus vulgaris
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome
  • Toxic epidermal necrolysis
  • Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSS)
  • Necrotizing fasciitis
  • Drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS syndrome)
  • Morgellons disease
  • Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (mycosis fungoides)
  • Behcet Disease
