Hematology Expert Witness

A Hematology expert witness is a Hematologist who testifies about the diagnosis and treatment of blood diseases and cancers such as lymphoma and leukemia. Hematology is the medical specialty dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders. Many Hematologists have dual Board Certification in Hematology and Oncology, though this is not a requirement. Some Hematologists also specialize in Pediatric Hematology, the treatment of blood disorders in children. Hematologic diseases are complex disorders that may involve red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and coagulation (the body’s ability to control bleeding). Hematologists also diagnose and treat blood-related malignancies such as leukemia and lymphoma, as well as premalignant conditions such as myelodysplastic syndrome. Hematologists use highly specialized tests and treat patents in both office-based practices and hospital systems. Common hematologic conditions include anemia, leukemia, lymphoma, and abnormal blood clots. A Hematology expert witness can testify regaridng any of these conditions.

Medical malpractice involving Hematology physicians is highly complex. When it occurs, allegations may include delayed diagnosis and treatment of a hematologic condition, as well as complications from the treatment itself. In other situations, a Hematologist may be called as a causation expert to explain the natural history of a hematologic process and how treatment affects outcome.
