INFECTIOUS DISEASE is the medical specialty dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of infections. Infections may be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites, and include such entities as tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, MRSA, C. difficile diarrhea, meningitis, sepsis, shingles, and chickenpox. Infectious Disease specialists are also called upon to evaluate patients with fever of unknown origin, and to treat established infections such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections, sepsis, and meningitis. Infectious Disease specialists see patients in both office-based practices and hospital systems.
